A case study showing how measuring workers’ sense of value and engagement can drive lasting improvements in factory conditions.
This study presents findings from Gap Inc.’s multi-country Workforce Engagement Program, developed to link worker well-being with supplier performance. Based on assessments in 78 facilities across five countries, it introduces “Sense of Value” (SOV) as a key performance indicator to measure how workers feel respected, involved, and supported at work. The results show strong correlations between positive management practices—like fair treatment, communication, and supervisor training—and higher engagement and retention. The program demonstrates how worker-centered metrics can enhance both business outcomes and social responsibility goals.
