About the initiative

Jump to:

The Farm Labor Due Diligence Initiative (FLDDI) is a Verité-led collaboration with companies and civil society organizations.

It seeks to define good practices and create tools to help companies, suppliers, and agricultural producers eliminate labor abuses from global agricultural supply chains.

Objectives of the Initiative

The Initiative aims to ensure that robust and proven HRDD approaches become the norm in agricultural supply chains. To do so, the Initiative will focus on:

  • Disseminating the FLDD Toolkit and First Mile Toolkit to companies, first mile operations, civil society organizations, multistakeholder initiatives, and governmental organizations
  • Expanding access to the existing tools, including through translation into additional languages
  • Supporting companies and first mile operations to apply the tools in their own operations and supply chains
  • Partnering with companies and first mile operations to develop new tools to be added to the Toolkit
  • Engaging with current discussions about HRDD guidelines and policy frameworks to promote uptake of robust and proven approaches

History of the Initiative

The Farm Labor Due Diligence Initiative was founded in 2022. Since then, the Initiative has achieved a number of key milestones, including the development and launch of:

  • A comprehensive HRDD framework for agricultural supply chains with 6 “elements” of due diligence, and specific “components” associated with each element
  • Detailed tools for each HRDD element, with guidance, a maturity framework, and action steps for each of the element’s components
  • A First Mile Toolkit tailored to the context of first mile operations in global supply chains, available in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese
  • An interactive website that allows visitors to benchmark their company’s HRDD practices and explore the FLDD toolkit online

Verité is grateful for the funding and support of the generous private sector and civil society partners that formed the Initiative’s Advisory Council and are featured below. Special thanks go to Philip Morris International, Mars, Incorporated, and the Rainforest Alliance, who participated in the Technical Working Group that drafted the Farm Labor Due Diligence Toolkit v1 (September 2024). Together, the Advisory Council and Technical Working Group ensure that the tools are as robust, practical, and scalable as possible.
