Verité is pleased to announce the launch of a new web resource, www.verite.org/africa, to help users understand the risk of human trafficking associated with global supply chains operating in sub-Saharan Africa. The African region has acted as a supplier of labor and raw materials to the rest of the world for centuries, often under terms that have resulted in harm to African people and nations. Companies and governments have both an ethical and a legal responsibility to minimize the risks to human rights associated with global economic activity in Africa, including the risk of human trafficking.
Verité is pleased to announce a new round of updates to the strawberries, bananas, pineapple, citrus, and melons commodity reports on the Responsible Sourcing Tool. These refreshed reports include the most recent information from the U.S. Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons Report and the U.S. Department of Labor’s List of Goods Produced by Forced Labor and Child Labor.
The Responsible Sourcing Tool is a new website created to help federal contractors and other companies, procurement officials, advocates, and consumers understand the risks of human trafficking in supply chains and the mechanisms to implement effective management systems to detect, prevent, and combat trafficking. The content was developed by Verité with the support and collaboration of the U.S. Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons in conjunction with other State Department and U.S. Government agency experts.
On Thursday, January 29, at the White House, Secretary of State John Kerry launched Verité’s research into trafficking risks and federal procurement supply chains. The report outlines the 11 business sectors at highest risk of trafficking which touch on federal procurement.
