Verité and Verité Southeast Asia stand in solidarity with the labor rights movement and the people of Myanmar in condemning the military coup which took place on February 1, 2021. Furthermore, Verité and VSEA strongly denounce the violent crackdown perpetrated by the Myanmar military and police forces against its citizens practicing their right to peacefully protest.

Verité conducted desk and field research to map out how jobseekers in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Lao PDR learn about jobs in Thailand, weigh risk factors and choose among the routes open to them. Through interviews with people on or connected with this journey, a picture emerged of a highly complex arena in which the needs of jobseekers, job-finders, employers, regulators, facilitators, and profiteers meet.
Myanmar is an emerging destination for multinationals and major suppliers, particularly in the garment sector. It is a place where Code of Conduct compliance is challenging due to systemic weaknesses in human resources practices among suppliers, minimal levels of awareness of rights on the part of workers, a minimally-developed civil society, and regulation that is often non-existent.
